Generally NO for exposed outdoor PV DC circuits. Ordinary wires cannot replace dedicated PV cables for open‑air solar installation.

Ordinary wires (BV, BVR, RVV, THHN etc.) are designed mainly for indoor AC applications. Their insulation/jacket (mostly PVC) has poor UV‑resistance, ozone‑resistance and high‑temperature aging performance. When exposed outdoors under sunlight, the sheath will turn brittle, crack within several years, causing insulation breakdown, DC arc‑fault and fire risk.

Core differences

  1. Material & environmental resistance PV cables (PV1‑F / H1Z2Z2‑K): cross‑linked XLPO double‑layer insulation & sheath, UV‑resistant, ozone‑resistant, long‑term working temperature up to 125 ℃, qualified for 25‑year outdoor service life.

Ordinary wires: PVC insulation, only for protected indoor/conduit environment, not resistant to long‑term UV radiation.

  1. Conductor PV cables adopt tinned copper conductor, anti‑oxidation for humid outdoor environment.

Ordinary building wires usually use bare copper, easy to oxidize under outdoor damp condition, rising resistance and heat generation.

  1. Electrical condition PV system runs on high‑voltage DC. DC arc is hard to extinguish once occurs. Ordinary AC‑rated wires are not validated for long‑term DC stress.

Exception case

Ordinary wires may be used only when fully running inside closed conduit, no sunlight exposure, and meet DC voltage rating of the PV system. Even so, it is not compliant with many solar standards such as EN 50618, and will void system warranty in most projects.

Short conclusion: ✅ Use standard PV cable (PV1‑F / H1Z2Z2‑K) for all exposed rooftop DC wiring. ❌ Do not use ordinary PVC‑insulated wires directly exposed under sunshine.
